Introduction: Journey South
2007 marks the beginning of the International Polar Year, which will highlight polar education and scientific study, with a focus on the effect of global climatic changes on the polar regions.
The photos on this blog document the experiences of U.S. Coast Guard Quartermaster David Eldred, stationed on the USCGC Eastwind, an ice-breaker assigned to Operation Deep Freeze, during the early 1960s. Operation Deep Freeze is an annual ice-breaking and resupply mission to McMurdo station.
While travel to Antarctica is still rare today, when Eldred visited the frozen continent, polar exploration was still in its infancy. The photos on this blog were taken between September 1961 and May 1962, or September 1962 and May 1963.
